PRECISE CLEANING AND SURFACE TREATMENT – WIDE SELECTION OF ABRASIVES

SANDBLASTING / SHOT BLASTING

Sandblasting of metals is a type of blasting treatment used in industrial production for cleaning surfaces from rust and/or preparing raw products for painting. During sandblasting, an abrasive jet is directed at the surface under high pressure to grind off the top layer of the component, including any dirt, rust or irregularities. Depending on the desired depth of abrasion and the material of which the workpiece is made, different types of abrasive as well as the time and intensity of the sandblasting/blasting process are selected.

Depending on the size of the sandblasted elements and the size of the order and the equipment available, sandblasting can be performed manually or in so-called sandblasting machines, where it is partially or fully automated. Sandblasting machines are used mainly for repetitive sandblasting of large series, especially elements of small and medium dimensions. In case of elements with very large dimensions or e.g. during restoration works of external installations (municipal infrastructure, pipelines, etc.), portable sets for manual sandblasting are used out of necessity.

TYPES OF SANDBLASTING AND ABRASIVES

A popular abrasive for cleaning metal parts, used e.g. in sandblasting machines with a closed abrasive circuit, for the treatment of small and medium-sized workpieces. It increases adhesion of workpiece surfaces and is often used to prepare raw parts for painting.

Eagerly used in the processing of stainless steels, copper, aluminum and their alloys, especially for products with thin or brittle walls. This abrasive is characterized by high elasticity, so it does not cause erosive abrasion. It is chemically inert and does not contain free silica and metal oxides.

Abrasives with strong cutting properties, suitable for deep cleaning. Due to their high resistance to breakage as well as their relatively high price, they are recommended for use in sandblasting machines with a closed abrasive circuit, where they can be used repeatedly. A wide range of grain sizes of both abrasives makes it possible to obtain surfaces of various textures.

Mainly used for sandblasting/cleaning of outdoor objects, facades, pipelines, tanks. It is important to protect the sand from moisture in the transport process and during work. Because of the danger of free silica release during sandblasting, it is advisable to protect the lungs rigorously and to use only water-protected abrasives.

It is important to remember that selecting the right abrasive of the right grain size is critical to the end result of the blasting operation. If the objective of sandblasting is to dull the surface, a fine grit blasting media will be the choice, resulting in a fine, silky finish. If the intent is to create a rough surface resembling pea graining, a coarser grit will be needed. At B2B Metal Bay, we perform a range of abrasive blasting services, cleaning work and preparation of metal parts for painting. We invite you to cooperation!
